Looks like we are getting a bit into politics over on the sandbox page and additionally some commenting that includes personal attacks on other commentors.
Until recent times we haven’t had to deal with too much politics–but obviously the current environment makes it a topic difficult to keep away from—BUT just the same we have to try to stay away. What is politics? I can’t define it really, but I think everyone posting knows it when they post something–you know it when you see it.
Personal attacks are easy to see and can’t be tolerated. I have had some posts end up in my moderation box that were never published–in particular those contained the ‘f; word. It is easy for me to set up boundaries on words, but once you start where do you stop?
We are now in the 20th year of this website and while we didn’t have commenting the first 10 years the last 9.5 years it has been what I consider one of the most important parts of the website.
So I am asking everyone to please follow the rules–I certainly appreciate it.
Sincerely
Tim McPartland
I’ve been wanting to say something for a while now, but couldn’t find the right place to post where it wouldn’t be out of context.
I really do love this site. I have gotten so many good ideas here and I credit this site for much of my investment success over the past several years. While I am still pretty significantly down since this recent volatility, I look at my holdings and the majority of my paper losses at this point are because of positions in NVDA, AAPL, IRM, INTC, and a number of other legacy common stock positions – they are also responsible for most of my recent gains, well, not Intel…… The rest of my portfolio (the portion since I found this site) has traded in a pretty tight range.
Tim has spent so much time and effort on this site – mostly for OUR benefit. (Obviously Tim benefits too from all of the discussion, research and expertise from so many excellent and knowledgeable posters) And he did it for many, many years on his own dime. I assume he has a passion for this, but I also think it speaks to his character – one of generosity, a leader, and also out of a desire to be the tide that lifts all boats.
When we bend and break TIM’S RULES by descending into politics, personal attacks and irrelevant drivel, I feel it shows a direct lack of respect towards Tim. Have you ever had someone dump trash on your front lawn, or find litter in your favorite stream, or dog poop at your local park…..? Yeah! I’ll bet that’s sometimes how Tim feels when we choose to disrespect HIS space.
Let us all remember why we are here, and why we are ABLE to be here. It is because of Mr. McPartland, and Mr. McPartland alone. I hope we can all show Tim the respect he deserves. And, return this site to the laser focused investing site he has built for all of us!
Thanks Mark–you make me blush with so much praise. Just trying to have some fun and keep this 71 year old brain engaged.
another investment site i go to has a simple rule for determing whether a post is political or not
if someone can easily tell which side you voted for by your post its a political post and will be removed
rdking647–good thought there.
Would mind naming the site? I’m always looking for more investment insight.
Tim – Thank you for stepping in! I saw the comment in question, made me sad. Didn’t want to enter into what Yahoo’s conversation has descended into.
Thanks David–no Yahoo stuff is going to be allowed here.
As much as I like a good fight, it doesn’t really add anything positive to III. We had that temporary experiment with “that guy” where it was nothing but rants and grudges. Tim runs a classy joint so kindly check your coat and six iron at the door.
I hate to split hairs, but don’t you mean partisan rather than political? Isn’t it acceptable to say that neither party cares much about deficits or the large amount of national debt?
Potter–yes you are correct.
Talking about the impact of it is investment discussion. Bashing one or both parties about it is political posturing. Easy to spot the difference.
Amen Tim. I may have wondered a little into the political arena, but never into personal attacks. I’ll try to stick to things of investing.
Thanks DJ—we have a good group of folks here—but it is easy to get sucked into politics
