‘Caching Issue’ Causing Problems on Site

As some know the website is experiencing issues with a ‘plugin’ which is causing issues in items I post. I took down a post from yesterday as it was only partially published and it repeated itself 3 times. Hopefully before the day is out I will have this resolved.

  1. I worked in IT for decades. The solution for this problem is simple. Take your right hand and smack the computer as hard as you can three times. It works every time. You’re welcome!

  2. Tim, I can offer my technical expertise. Did you check the air pressure in the Tires? Happy Holidays.

    1. Instead –maybe check BP after dealing with those issues.
Isn’t fixing it the paid guy’s job?

      1. Gary–I always look for the obvious before calling the paid folks–but they are working on it now.

    2. JDC–that is the extent of my tech knowledge also. The tech folks had a solution in no time so hopefully it is resolved.

      Happy holidays to you also!

    1. Doug–it is always something and at 71 I feel more and more technically worthless.

        1. Checked my archaic ( ’62) mental filing cards:
After my first Univ physics course required programming an analysis of light in a rainbow in fortran for compiling on their punch card IBM computer, I realized programming was never for me.
The times, they are a changin’ –Ha!

          1. Gary, I have worked in IT while and since university so 29 years or so. I was already programming before then but the first course at the University, in 1995 was also Fortran on a VAX/VMS mainframe but they did have SCSI hard drives so no punch cards. That language is a far cry from today’s and I recall having to have the position (indentation) of lines precise or a whole program wouldn’t function properly.

It’s been quite an evolution. If you were so inclined you might be impressed to ask ChatGPT to write a Fortran program for a project you once did and see it rip it out in seconds. I use generative AI frequently to get a basic structure started.

      1. I spent my career, before retiring, in Information Technology (IT). Somehow, modern-day IT has convinced everybody that their bugs are because their users not being literate enough. Their bad code is their bad code.

        1. I graduated in 1986 with a degree in CISP (computer information systems programming). 39 years later, I’m still going strong. WFH is a blessing. Without that I’m not sure what I’d be doing.

        2. Amen SteveA

I was in an advisory board meeting recently at a silicon valley software company. We had asked them to show us the analysis of their three biggest outages from Q3.

Very sad presentation. Every one was from coder idiocy. No tests, no rollback, alerts not in place/working (even though all are required).

The CTO (new guy, seems very competent) gave the presentation and expressed his frustration at getting staff to follow simple policies. CEO stepped in to say he had just fired one of the founders who wouldn’t “straighten up and fly right” because it turned out he had caused two of the big outages after being previously warned about pushing updates that hadn’t been tested, etc.

IMHO, the stupid adage attributed to Mark Zuckerberg of “move fast and break things” has settled in to too many young programmers. They don’t like being required to have tests, rollbacks, etc. because they take time. https://xkcd.com/1428/

Talked to the CTO afterwards. He is very frustrated (as he knew he would be when he took this job). Trying to to change corporate culture and hire better people so he can fire more of the idiots. Just really hard to find good staff in silicon valley.
Kinda funny though – he is in his 30s but is focused on hiring more guys in their 40s and 50s because they can actually follow “the rules”.

Sorry tim – didn’t mean for this to sound like a criticism of your guys. Sounds like you have some good ones. Just frustration with the software industry in general.

      2. Tim, it’s not your age! I was in your neighborhood last week and woke up to -4F with a -25F wind chill factor. Brain cells freeze at that temp. Gotta fly south for the winter. . .
